Loyalty Points Update SMS Template for Retail Stores & Supermarkets

A ready-to-adapt SMS message for retail stores and supermarkets, with placeholders, sample values and compliance notes.

When to Send This Message

Send after purchases that earn points. For retail stores and supermarkets, this is one of the everyday messages that keeps customers informed without a phone call. It can be sent manually from a panel at first and automated later through an API.

Neighbourhood retail competes with quick-commerce apps on trust, range and personal service.

The SMS Template

India (DLT format)

Header: [6-character header]-S · Category: Service Implicit

Dear {#var#}, you earned {#var#} points on your purchase at [Business Name]. Your balance is {#var#} points, valid till {#var#}.

International (plain text)

Dear {customer}, you earned {points} points on your purchase at [Business Name]. Your balance is {balance} points, valid till {date}.

Example with sample values

Dear Mrs. Patel, you earned 46 points on your purchase at [Business Name]. Your balance is 512 points, valid till 31 Mar.

With these sample values the message is 123 characters in the standard GSM-7 character set, which is 1 SMS part (square brackets count as two characters each). Long links or local-language (Unicode) text increase the count, as Unicode SMS allow 70 characters per single part.

Replace [Business Name] with your registered brand name. Links shown use example.com as a placeholder; use your own domain.

Placeholders and Sample Values

PlaceholderMeaningSample value
{#var#}CustomerMrs. Patel
{#var#}Points46
{#var#}Balance512
{#var#}Date31 Mar

Filling in each placeholder

  • Customer (sample: Mrs. Patel): Use the first name or the salutation the customer gave you; fall back to a neutral greeting if the field is empty.
  • Points (sample: 46): Keep the value short and specific; test the longest realistic value to check the message still reads well.
  • Balance (sample: 512): Write amounts as Rs. 1,499 rather than with the rupee symbol, which forces Unicode encoding in SMS and shortens each part to 70 characters.
  • Date (sample: 31 Mar): Write dates in an unambiguous form such as 14 Oct or 14 Oct 2026; avoid formats like 10/11 that customers read differently.

This template has 4 placeholders and a body of 133 characters before values are filled in. Shorter messages cost less and are more likely to be read in full; aim to keep the filled-in message within one or two SMS parts.

Category and Approval

In India this type of message is usually registered as Service Implicit: it relates to an existing transaction or relationship and can be delivered to numbers on the DND registry. It must not contain promotional content.

Compliance Checklist

  • Each {#var#} holds only the kind of value it was registered for; most platforms limit each variable to 30 characters.
  • Any link uses a domain whitelisted for your header, as TRAI requires for URLs in commercial SMS.
  • The brand name in the message matches your registered business or header.

Rules to keep in mind for Retail Stores & Supermarkets

Offers must be genuine and clearly state validity and conditions under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. Customer phone numbers collected at billing can only be used for marketing with consent.

General guidance, not legal advice. Rules change, so confirm current requirements before launch. See our SMS compliance guide for India.

Tips for Better Results

  • Keep one purpose per message; if you need to send a reminder and a document, the reminder should still make sense on its own.
  • Use the customer's name and a reference number so the message is easy to trust and to search for later.

Getting the loyalty points update message right

Show the points earned on this purchase, the total balance and its value in rupees or the local currency. Remind customers how to redeem points and any minimum needed. Clear point balances encourage repeat visits. Mention member-only offers.

Where this message fits for Retail Stores & Supermarkets

Shoppers check online whether a store has what they need, what it costs and when it is open, then visit or order for pickup. Loyalty programmes, personal service and timely offers bring them back, and many now expect to message the store directly.

Google Business Profile and maps listings drive store visits; Instagram shows new arrivals; WhatsApp answers stock questions and takes orders; SMS sends offers to loyalty members; email shares seasonal catalogues.
