Website Redesign Cost for Small Businesses: A USD Guide With an SEO-Safe Checklist

For small businesses in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and the UAE, a redesign can lift enquiries or quietly destroy years of Google rankings. This guide covers indicative USD costs, what drives them, and how to redesign safely.

By the DND Teams editorial team · Updated

Most small business websites reach a point where a redesign feels overdue. The site looks dated next to competitors, it is awkward on mobile, the team cannot update it without calling a developer, or it simply does not turn visitors into enquiries. At the same time, many owners worry about cost, and about losing the Google rankings they already have.

Both concerns are reasonable. This guide explains indicative redesign costs in US dollars, the factors that move the price, how outsourcing can reduce cost without reducing quality, and a practical checklist for redesigning without losing search traffic. If you are planning a brand-new site rather than a redesign, see our guide to website design cost in the USA.

Refresh, redesign or rebuild?

The word "redesign" covers very different projects:

  • Refresh: new visual design on the same platform and structure, with light content edits. Best when the site works but looks dated.
  • Redesign: new design, improved page structure and rewritten key pages, usually on the same platform. Best when the site is not converting well.
  • Rebuild or replatform: moving to a new platform (for example from an old custom CMS or Wix to WordPress or Shopify), often with new URLs. Best when the current platform is holding you back, but it carries the highest SEO risk.

Knowing which one you need is the biggest single factor in cost.

Indicative redesign costs (USD)

The figures below are indicative "starting from" ranges for projects delivered by our team, in line with our current price list. They exclude taxes and third-party costs such as premium themes, plugins, stock images, hosting and platform subscriptions. Your quote depends on your scope.

Project type Indicative starting price Typically includes
Website refresh custom quote Up to 5 existing pages restyled on the current platform, mobile fixes, speed basics
Starter redesign typically US$700–US$1,800 Up to 5 pages, new design, contact form, basic on-page SEO, redirects where needed
Professional redesign typically US$1,800–US$4,000 10–15 pages, custom styling, rewritten key pages, local SEO, booking or quote forms
E-commerce redesign typically US$4,000+ Shopify or WooCommerce, up to 100 products, payments, shipping, product data migration

Prices are in US dollars and follow our current price list. Larger sites, complex integrations, multilingual sites and custom features cost more. A good provider will give you a written, itemised quote before any work starts.

What drives the cost of a redesign

  1. Number of pages and templates. Twenty service pages that share one layout cost less than twenty unique layouts.
  2. Content. Rewriting copy for conversion and SEO takes time, but it often has more impact than the new design itself.
  3. Platform change. Moving platforms means rebuilding pages, migrating content and products, and mapping URLs.
  4. Integrations. CRM, booking systems, payment gateways, email marketing, live chat and WhatsApp buttons.
  5. Design approach. A customised theme is faster than fully custom design with wireframes and prototypes.
  6. Accessibility and performance. Meeting accessibility guidelines and Core Web Vitals targets needs careful build work and testing.
  7. SEO migration work. Redirect mapping, metadata transfer and post-launch monitoring, covered below.

Why outsourcing can cut cost without cutting quality

Many agencies in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and the UAE already outsource development to offshore teams and resell it at local rates. Working directly with an experienced offshore team can reduce cost, provided you choose carefully. Look for:

  • A portfolio of sites for clients in your country
  • Clear written scope, milestones and fixed or capped pricing
  • Working-hour overlap and a named project manager
  • Your ownership of the domain, hosting, code and all accounts from day one
  • Familiarity with your market's expectations, such as accessibility in the US, GDPR and PECR consent in the UK, or bilingual layouts in the UAE

Our guide to outsourcing marketing to an Indian agency covers how to evaluate offshore partners, and how to choose a website design company lists the questions to ask.

The SEO-safe redesign checklist

Google's guidance on site moves with URL changes explains the core principle: if URLs change, map every old URL to its new equivalent with permanent (301) redirects. In practice:

Before you start

  • Benchmark: record current traffic, rankings, top landing pages and conversions from Google Analytics and Google Search Console.
  • Crawl the existing site and export every URL, title, meta description and heading.
  • Identify your most valuable pages: those with traffic, rankings, backlinks or conversions. Keep or improve them; do not delete them casually.

During the redesign

  • Keep URLs the same where you can. Unchanged URLs carry the least risk.
  • Create a redirect map from every old URL to the most relevant new URL. Avoid redirecting everything to the home page.
  • Carry over and improve on-page SEO: titles, descriptions, headings, internal links, image alt text and structured data.
  • Do not cut valuable content just to make pages look cleaner.
  • Build on a staging site blocked from indexing, so Google does not index the unfinished version.

At launch

  • Remove the staging noindex on the live site (a common and costly mistake is launching with indexing still blocked).
  • Implement redirects and test a sample of old URLs.
  • Submit the new XML sitemap in Google Search Console.
  • Check analytics and conversion tracking, including forms, calls and chat.

After launch

  • Monitor Search Console for crawl errors and 404s and fix them quickly.
  • Compare traffic and rankings with your benchmark over the following weeks.
  • Keep redirects in place for the long term.

Some ranking movement after a redesign is normal while search engines process changes. Large or lasting drops usually point to missing redirects, lost content, or indexing problems.

Signs you need a redesign

  • Most of your traffic is mobile, but enquiries come mainly from desktop
  • Pages load slowly on mobile networks
  • You cannot update content yourself
  • Your offer, prices or services have changed but the site has not
  • Competitors look more trustworthy
  • Visitors arrive but rarely call, book or fill in forms

How to brief a redesign so quotes are comparable

Send every provider the same short brief:

  • Your current website address and platform
  • Goals: more calls, bookings, quote requests or online sales
  • Pages to keep, merge or remove, and any new pages needed
  • Integrations: CRM, booking, payments, email marketing, chat
  • Who writes and supplies content and images
  • Must-haves for your market, such as accessibility, cookie consent or bilingual layout
  • Budget range and target launch date

A consistent brief makes it easy to compare scope, timeline and price side by side.

Redesign timeline at a glance

  1. Discovery and audit (week 1): goals, analytics benchmark, crawl and content inventory.
  2. Structure and content (weeks 1–3): sitemap, wireframes, rewritten key pages and redirect map.
  3. Design and build (weeks 2–6): design approval, development on a staging site, integrations.
  4. QA and launch (final week): testing on devices and browsers, redirects, tracking and sitemap submission.
  5. Aftercare (weeks after launch): Search Console monitoring, fixes and performance review.

Smaller refreshes compress these stages; larger replatforming projects extend them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a small business website redesign cost?

As an indicative guide, starter redesigns typically cost US$700–US$1,800 professional redesigns typically US$1,800–US$4,000 and e-commerce redesigns typically US$4,000+ while a light refresh of existing pages is a custom quote, excluding taxes and third-party costs. Your quote depends on scope.

Will a website redesign hurt my Google rankings?

It does not have to. Keep URLs where possible, redirect every changed URL with a 301 redirect to its closest equivalent, preserve valuable content and on-page SEO, and monitor Search Console after launch.

Is it cheaper to outsource a website redesign?

Often yes. Experienced offshore teams can deliver at lower cost, as long as you agree a written scope, fixed or capped price, clear milestones and full ownership of your domain, hosting and code.

How long does a website redesign take?

A small refresh can take a couple of weeks, while a full redesign or replatform usually takes several weeks, depending largely on content readiness and feedback speed.

Should I change platforms during a redesign?

Only if the current platform is holding you back. Replatforming usually changes URLs and needs careful redirect mapping, so it carries more SEO risk than a redesign on the same platform.
