SEO is one of the hardest marketing services to price. Two agencies can look at the same website and quote £400 and £3,000 a month, and both call it "SEO". The difference is usually in scope: how many pages and keywords are covered, how much content is produced, how much technical work is needed and whether link building is included.
This guide explains what drives the cost of SEO for UK businesses in 2026, so that you can set a realistic budget and compare quotes fairly. If you are choosing between agencies, see also how to choose an SEO agency and our guide to SEO agency contracts.
How SEO is usually priced
UK agencies and freelancers use four main models:
- Monthly retainer. The most common model: a fixed monthly fee for an agreed scope of technical work, content, local SEO and reporting.
- One-off audit. A technical and content review with a prioritised fix list, often used before a retainer or a website rebuild.
- Project fee. For a defined job such as a site migration, a new set of location pages or a content hub.
- Hourly or day rate. Common for consultants who advise an in-house team.
Retainers usually have a minimum term because results build over months, not weeks.
What drives the price
The main factors are:
- Competition. Ranking a plumber in one town is a different job from ranking a national e-commerce store or a London law firm.
- Number of locations and markets. Each location page and Google Business Profile adds work, and international SEO adds languages and hreflang.
- Keywords and pages. More target keywords usually means more pages to optimise or create.
- Content volume. Blog posts, guides and landing pages are often the largest part of the monthly cost.
- Technical state of the site. Slow pages, duplicate content, broken redirects or a poor site structure need fixing first.
- Links and digital PR. Earning mentions and links from relevant UK publications takes time and is priced separately by many agencies.
Typical SEO budgets
Our SEO plans are quoted on your requirements, at prices well below typical UK agency rates because our team is based in India. We quote and invoice in US dollars:
| Package | Typical monthly fee | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | typically US$350–US$700 | Local SEO, Google Business Profile optimisation, 10 target keywords, 2 blog posts a month |
| Growth | typically US$700–US$1,400 | 25 target keywords, 4 blog posts a month, technical SEO fixes, citations and backlinks |
| Premium | typically US$1,400+ | 50+ target keywords, a content hub, digital PR links, multi-location SEO |
Monthly plans have a 3-month minimum term. Your final price is fixed in a written quotation after a free requirement call. See how our pricing works for what affects your quote.
VAT when you hire an overseas SEO agency
UK agencies charge VAT at the standard rate of 20% if they are VAT-registered. When a UK business buys services such as SEO from a supplier outside the UK, the overseas supplier normally does not charge UK VAT. If your business is VAT-registered, you usually account for the VAT yourself under the reverse charge, which in most cases is neutral for a business that can reclaim input VAT. Check your own position with your accountant.
What a fair SEO retainer should include
Whatever you pay, a professional UK SEO retainer should give you:
- A written scope listing the deliverables each month, such as pages optimised, posts published and technical fixes.
- Access to your own Google Search Console, Google Analytics 4 and Google Business Profile, owned by you, not the agency.
- Monthly reports on rankings, organic traffic and enquiries or sales, in plain English.
- A named contact and calls in UK working hours.
- Clear exit terms and a hand-over of all content and accounts if you leave.
Rules that affect UK SEO work
- UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 apply to forms, tracking and any personal data your site collects.
- PECR governs cookies and similar tracking. The Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 changed some cookie rules, so check the ICO's current guidance before you change your cookie banner.
- Advertising rules. Claims on your pages, such as prices, reviews and "best" claims, must follow the CAP Code enforced by the Advertising Standards Authority.
- Reviews. Fake reviews are banned under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024. Never buy reviews for Google Business Profile.
Red flags in SEO proposals
- Guaranteed rankings. Google's own guidance says no one can guarantee a number one ranking.
- Very cheap link packages. Hundreds of links for a small fee usually means low-quality or paid links that can harm your site.
- No access to your accounts. You should own your Search Console, Analytics and Business Profile.
- Vague reporting. Reports full of keyword positions but no traffic or enquiry data.
- Long lock-ins without a break clause.
How to compare quotes
Ask each agency for the same things: an audit summary of your site, the target keywords and pages, a month-by-month plan for the first three months, the deliverables included each month, and the reporting you will receive. Then compare the scope, not just the price.
