For years, SMS has been the dependable workhorse of UK business messaging: delivery notifications, appointment reminders, one-time passcodes and the occasional promotion. It works on every phone, but it is plain text from a number or short sender name, with no images, no buttons and no verified branding.
RCS (Rich Communication Services) changes that. It is the modern standard for messaging in the phone's built-in messages app, and RCS Business Messaging (RBM) lets companies send branded, interactive messages, complete with logo, verified name, images, carousels and suggested-reply buttons, without the customer downloading anything. This guide explains how RCS works in the UK, what you need to get started and where it fits alongside SMS and WhatsApp.
What is RCS Business Messaging?
RCS is a messaging standard developed through the GSMA, the global mobile industry association. On Android, it is built into Google Messages and is enabled for most users. Apple added RCS support to the iPhone's Messages app with iOS 18 in 2024, with support depending on the user's network.
RCS Business Messaging is the business layer of that standard. A brand that sends RBM messages gets:
- A verified sender profile with your brand name, logo, colour and a verified badge
- Rich cards and carousels with images, titles, descriptions and buttons
- Suggested replies and actions such as "Track order", "Call us", "Open map" or "Add to calendar"
- Read receipts and typing indicators, so you can see engagement
- Longer messages without the 160-character limit of SMS
How RCS works in the UK
In the UK, RCS business traffic is carried through the mobile networks and the messaging platforms that connect to them, most commonly through Google's RBM platform. Your provider, called an RBM partner or aggregator, connects your systems to that platform. Practical points:
- Device support: Most modern Android phones using Google Messages support RCS. iPhones running iOS 18 or later can receive RCS where the user's carrier has enabled it. Coverage is growing, but not every recipient will be RCS-capable at any given time.
- Fallback to SMS: Good RCS platforms check whether a recipient can receive RCS. If not, they send a fallback SMS, so every customer still gets the message. Always plan an SMS version of each campaign.
- Billing: RCS messages are typically billed differently from SMS, often by message type (for example, a basic text message versus a single rich message or a conversational session). The exact model depends on your provider and network agreements.
Getting verified: what UK brands need
Before you send, your brand must be registered and verified. The process usually includes:
- Creating the agent (your RCS sender profile): brand name, logo, banner image, colour, description, website, phone and privacy policy link.
- Brand verification: confirming that you are authorised to represent the brand, usually with a contact at the business.
- Use-case declaration: whether your agent sends OTPs, transactional updates, promotions or multi-purpose messages.
- Network approval: carriers review and launch the agent on their networks. Timelines vary, so allow several weeks rather than days.
Your privacy policy and website should be live and consistent with the brand name you register. Mismatched names or missing policies are common reasons for delays.
Rules that still apply: PECR and UK GDPR
RCS is new, but the law is not. In the UK, electronic marketing messages are covered by the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), and personal data processing by the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, all enforced by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). In summary:
- You generally need consent to send marketing messages to individuals by electronic means, including RCS.
- The soft opt-in may allow marketing to existing customers about similar products, if they were given a chance to opt out when you collected their details and in every message.
- Every marketing message must identify the sender and offer a simple way to opt out.
- Keep records of how and when consent was obtained.
The Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 made several changes to PECR, including bringing PECR fines up to UK GDPR levels. Check the ICO's latest guidance before a large campaign. Our UK RCS compliance page has a short checklist.
Best use cases for RCS in the UK
- Retail and e-commerce: product carousels, back-in-stock alerts, order tracking with a "Track parcel" button.
- Travel and hospitality: booking confirmations, check-in reminders with a map button, upgrade offers.
- Healthcare and clinics: appointment reminders with "Confirm" and "Reschedule" buttons. Avoid sensitive health details in message content.
- Utilities and telecoms: bill reminders with a direct payment link, outage updates.
- Automotive: service reminders with quick booking.
- Education: open day invitations and enrolment reminders.
RCS vs SMS vs WhatsApp for UK businesses
| SMS | RCS | WhatsApp Business | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reach | Every mobile phone | RCS-capable phones; SMS fallback for others | Users with WhatsApp who opted in |
| Branding | Sender name only | Verified logo, name and colour | Verified business profile |
| Rich media | No | Images, carousels, buttons | Images, video, documents, buttons |
| App needed | Built in | Built in | WhatsApp app |
| Best for | OTPs, critical alerts, universal reach | Branded promotions and interactive journeys in the default app | Two-way customer service and conversations |
Many UK brands end up using all three: SMS for universal reach and fallback, RCS for rich campaigns on Android and newer iPhones, and WhatsApp for customers who prefer to chat there. Our article on RCS vs SMS vs WhatsApp covers the trade-offs in more depth.
Measuring RCS campaigns
RCS gives richer reporting than SMS. Track:
- Delivery rate, split by RCS delivered and SMS fallback
- Read rate, which SMS cannot report
- Button clicks on each suggested action
- Replies and conversations started
- Conversions, using tagged links (UTM parameters) to your website
Because read and click data are available, you can A/B test images, button labels and send times more reliably than with SMS.
A sample RCS journey for a UK retailer
To make this concrete, here is how a typical back-in-stock campaign might look for an online fashion retailer in Manchester:
- Trigger: a customer who opted in to marketing and asked to be notified about a jacket in their size.
- Message: a rich card with the product photo, name and price, the verified brand logo at the top, and two buttons: "View jacket" and "Not interested".
- Fallback: if the phone is not RCS-capable, an SMS goes out instead: "[Brand]: The jacket you asked about is back in your size. Shop: [link]. Reply STOP to opt out."
- Follow-up: customers who tap "View jacket" but do not buy may receive one gentle reminder 24 hours later. Customers who tap "Not interested" are excluded from that product's reminders.
- Reporting: the retailer sees read rate, button taps and sales from the tagged link, separately for RCS and SMS fallback.
This kind of journey respects the customer, gives them control and produces data you can actually act on.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Launching without an SMS fallback, leaving non-RCS users without a message
- Registering a brand name that does not match your website and privacy policy
- Treating RCS as exempt from PECR consent rules
- Overloading carousels with too many products or long text
- Not tracking button clicks and link conversions
