Most UK online stores rely heavily on paid search, paid social and marketplaces. Those channels work, but costs per click tend to rise as more competitors bid, and marketplaces take a share of every sale. Organic search is different: once your category and product pages rank, they keep bringing visitors without a cost per click.
This guide explains how e-commerce SEO works for UK stores on Shopify, WooCommerce and similar platforms, what to fix first, and what realistic results and costs look like.
Why e-commerce SEO is different
A service business might have twenty pages. A store may have hundreds or thousands of product pages, plus categories, filters, collections, variants and blog content. That scale creates both opportunity and risk:
- Opportunity: many pages can rank for many specific, high-intent searches, such as "women's waterproof walking boots wide fit".
- Risk: duplicate content, thin product descriptions, crawl waste from filters and broken pages from discontinued products can hold the whole site back.
Step 1: Keyword research for shoppers
Start with how customers actually search. Group keywords by intent:
- Category intent: "oak dining tables", "kids' raincoats", "vegan protein powder"
- Product intent: brand plus model, or specific attributes, such as "extendable oak dining table 6 seater"
- Comparison intent: "best", "vs", "review" and "alternative" searches
- Informational intent: "how to clean suede shoes", "what size rug for a living room"
Use UK English and UK terms. Shoppers search for "trainers", not "sneakers"; "jumpers", not "sweaters"; and "sofa" more than "couch". Map each important keyword group to one page so that pages do not compete with each other.
Step 2: Category and collection pages
Category pages are often the most valuable pages in e-commerce SEO, because they target broad, high-volume, commercial searches. Improve them by:
- Writing a unique, helpful introduction above or below the product grid
- Adding buying advice, such as sizing, materials and care, in a short section
- Using a clear title tag and H1 that match the main keyword
- Linking to related subcategories and popular filters
- Adding FAQ content that answers real customer questions
Avoid blocks of keyword-stuffed text. Write for the shopper first.
Step 3: Product pages
Manufacturer descriptions are copied across hundreds of sites. Unique product content helps you stand out:
- Original descriptions with benefits, materials, dimensions and use cases
- Multiple high-quality images with descriptive alt text
- Size guides and delivery and returns information
- Genuine customer reviews, collected through a verified review platform
- Structured data for products, including price, availability and review rating where genuine
Never write fake reviews. In the UK, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 strengthened the rules against fake reviews, and the CMA can take enforcement action.
Step 4: Technical SEO for Shopify and WooCommerce
Shopify
- Shopify creates multiple URLs for the same product when it appears in collections. Make sure internal links point to the canonical product URL.
- Theme apps can slow down your store. Remove apps you no longer use and check that their code has been removed.
- Use clean URL handles and edit the title tags and meta descriptions for products and collections.
- Check that filtered collection URLs are not creating thousands of thin, indexable pages.
WooCommerce
- Choose a fast host and use caching.
- Control indexation of tag pages, filtered URLs and internal search results.
- Keep plugins and WordPress updated for security.
All platforms
- Fast loading on mobile, with compressed images and a lightweight theme
- An XML sitemap submitted to Google Search Console
- No broken internal links or redirect chains
- HTTPS everywhere
- Structured data validated with Google's Rich Results Test
Step 5: Handling discontinued and out-of-stock products
- Temporarily out of stock: keep the page live, show expected availability and offer a "notify me" option.
- Permanently discontinued with a close replacement: redirect to the replacement product with a 301 redirect.
- Discontinued without replacement: redirect to the most relevant category, or keep a page with alternatives if it still receives useful traffic.
Step 6: Google Merchant Center and free listings
Google shows products from Merchant Center in free listings on the Shopping tab and in other surfaces. Connecting your store's product feed to Merchant Center is one of the quickest wins for UK retailers. Keep the feed accurate: prices, availability, delivery costs and returns information must match your site.
Step 7: Content that supports sales
Helpful guides and comparison content attract shoppers earlier in their journey and earn links. Good examples include buying guides, size and fit guides, care instructions and gift guides for seasonal events. Link each guide to relevant categories and products.
Step 8: Earning links and mentions
Links from relevant websites still matter. Ethical ways to earn them include:
- Product reviews from genuine bloggers and publications, disclosed where gifted
- Local press coverage for your story, charity work or events
- Supplier and manufacturer "where to buy" pages
- Useful data or guides others want to reference
Avoid buying links; it breaches Google's spam policies and can harm rankings.
Step 9: Measuring results
- Organic sessions to category and product pages
- Organic revenue and conversion rate in your analytics
- Rankings for your priority keyword groups
- Impressions and clicks in Google Search Console
- Indexed pages versus pages you want indexed
How long does e-commerce SEO take?
Technical fixes can show results within weeks, while category and content work usually takes several months to build momentum. Competitive categories such as fashion and electronics take longer. Any agency that guarantees first-page rankings by a date should be treated with caution.

Common mistakes
- Copying manufacturer descriptions across the whole catalogue
- Letting filter and search pages get indexed in large numbers
- Deleting discontinued products without redirects
- Ignoring category page content
- Chasing traffic keywords that do not lead to sales
Combining SEO with messaging
SEO brings new shoppers. Messaging keeps them buying. With consent, SMS and WhatsApp can recover abandoned baskets, send delivery updates and announce new collections. Our WhatsApp API guide for UK e-commerce explains how.
International shipping and multiple markets
If you sell to Ireland, Europe, the US or Australia as well as the UK, think about how search engines will understand which version of your store is for which market. Shopify Markets and similar tools can create localised versions with the right currency, language and URL structure. Use hreflang tags so Google shows the right version in each country, adjust spelling and terminology where needed and make sure delivery and returns information is accurate for every market. Do not create near-identical pages for different countries without real differences in price, currency or shipping, because they add little value.
A 90-day plan for a UK store
- Month 1: Technical audit, speed fixes, indexation clean-up and Merchant Center feed.
- Month 2: Rewrite the top 10 category pages and the top 50 product pages by revenue.
- Month 3: Publish buying guides that link to categories, and start ethical link outreach.
