Outsourcing SEO to India is not new, but the way businesses do it has changed. Instead of buying cheap link packages, Canadian and Australian companies now hire Indian agencies for technical SEO, content, local SEO and reporting, run under a proper contract with clear deliverables.
This guide is for business owners and marketing managers in Canada and Australia who are considering an India-based SEO partner. It covers the practical details that decide whether the arrangement works. For market prices at home, see our guides to SEO services cost in Australia and affordable SEO services for Canadian small businesses.
Why businesses outsource SEO to India
- Cost. Senior SEO specialists in India cost less than in Toronto, Vancouver, Sydney or Melbourne, so the same budget buys more hours of skilled work.
- Depth of skills. India has a large pool of experienced technical SEO specialists, content writers, developers and analysts, so one agency can cover several skills.
- English-language work. Indian agencies routinely write and optimise English content for international markets.
- Working while you sleep. For Canadian clients especially, work can progress overnight and be ready for review in the morning.
The trade-offs are real too: time zones, local market knowledge, and the need for tighter briefs and approvals. The rest of this guide is about managing those.
Time zones: where the overlap is
India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 and does not change for daylight saving, so the overlap with your city shifts by an hour when your clocks change.
| Your city | Time difference to India | Typical overlap |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney / Melbourne | India is 4.5 hours behind (5.5 in daylight saving time) | Your afternoon = India's morning. 2 pm AEST is 9:30 am IST |
| Brisbane | India is 4.5 hours behind all year | Same as Sydney in winter |
| Perth | India is 2.5 hours behind | Most of the working day overlaps |
| Toronto | India is 9.5 hours ahead (10.5 in winter) | Your early morning = India's evening. 8 am EDT is 5:30 pm IST |
| Vancouver / Calgary | India is 12.5 or 11.5 hours ahead in summer | Very little live overlap; work asynchronously |
Australia has the easiest overlap: a weekly call in the Australian afternoon is in Indian working hours. Canada needs more planning: set an early-morning call slot for Eastern time, or rely on written updates and recorded walkthroughs for Western Canada. Write the agreed meeting slot and response time into the statement of work.
What to outsource first
Some SEO work outsources very well; some needs more input from you.
Easy to outsource: - technical audits and fixes (crawling, indexing, site speed, structured data), - on-page optimisation of titles, headings and internal links, - keyword research and content briefs, - reporting from Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4.
Needs your input: - content that needs product or industry expertise: the agency drafts, you review, - local SEO, where you provide accurate business details, photos and customer reviews, - digital PR and partnerships, which depend on your local relationships.
A good agency will ask you for a short monthly approval slot for content, rather than publishing without review.
Contracts: what to put in writing
Use a written agreement or statement of work that covers:
- Deliverables per month: for example the number of pages optimised, articles written and technical fixes.
- Minimum term and notice: a short minimum term followed by a rolling month-to-month arrangement is fair.
- Ownership: content, reports and website changes belong to you; analytics and Search Console are under your accounts.
- Access: named user accounts with limited permissions, never shared passwords.
- Reporting: monthly reports with traffic, leads or sales from organic search, and work completed.
- Exit: what you receive and how access is removed when the engagement ends.
- Governing law and currency: which country's law applies, and whether invoices are in USD, CAD or AUD.
Privacy and anti-spam rules still apply
Outsourcing does not move your legal obligations offshore.
Canada. Under PIPEDA, an organisation that transfers personal information to a third party for processing remains accountable for it and should use contractual or other means to protect it. If your SEO partner also runs email campaigns, Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) applies to commercial electronic messages sent to Canadians, including consent and unsubscribe requirements.
Australia. The Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles apply to many businesses; APP 8 deals with disclosing personal information to overseas recipients. If email marketing is included, the Spam Act 2003 requires consent, sender identification and a working unsubscribe.
Most SEO work does not need access to customer personal data. Keep it that way: give the agency access to analytics and Search Console, not your CRM, unless the work truly needs it. This is general information, not legal advice.
Payments and taxes
Most Indian agencies invoice international clients in USD and accept international bank transfers or online payment links. Check who pays transfer and currency conversion fees, and the billing date. For tax, ask your accountant how GST/HST in Canada or GST in Australia applies to services you import from an overseas supplier for your business.
Judging results fairly
SEO results take time. In the first few months you should see completed technical fixes, better indexing and early movement for target pages. Leads and sales from organic search usually build over several months. Judge an agency by:
- whether it delivered what the plan promised each month,
- whether reports come from your own data, and
- the trend in organic leads or sales, not only rankings.
Be cautious of any provider that guarantees rankings. Google says no one can guarantee a position in search results.
What does outsourced SEO cost?
Outsourced SEO from India usually costs noticeably less than a comparable local retainer in Canada or Australia. Our indicative ranges, in USD and excluding taxes (your quotation depends on your requirements):
| Plan | Starting price | Good fit for |
|---|---|---|
| Local SEO | typically US$350–US$700 per month | One location, one city or region |
| Growth SEO | typically US$700–US$1,400 per month | Several services or locations |
| Authority SEO | typically US$1,400+ per month | Competitive markets, e-commerce, content hubs |
Each plan has a 3-month minimum, then continues month to month. Any paid tools you ask us to add are billed at cost. See our pricing page for the full list and our SEO services page for what each plan includes.
