Abandoned Cart Reminder RCS Template for E-commerce & D2C Brands

A ready-to-adapt RCS message for e-commerce stores and D2C brands, with placeholders, sample values and compliance notes.

When to Send This Message

Send to opted-in shoppers a few hours after they leave items in the cart. For e-commerce stores and D2C brands, this is one of the everyday messages that keeps shoppers informed without a phone call. Most businesses send it automatically from their software, so the timing is consistent.

Online shoppers compare prices and reviews across marketplaces, social media and brand websites.

Placeholders and Sample Values

PlaceholderMeaningSample value

Filling in each placeholder

  • Customer (sample: Sneha): Use the first name or the salutation the customer gave you; fall back to a neutral greeting if the field is empty.
  • Item (sample: Cotton Kurta Set): Keep the value short and specific; test the longest realistic value to check the message still reads well.
  • Link (sample: https://example.com/c/EC2): Use your own short, recognisable domain; for SMS in India the domain must be whitelisted on DLT, and each variable is usually limited to 30 characters.

This template has 3 placeholders and a body of 90 characters before values are filled in. RCS card descriptions can be longer than SMS, but the first line should still carry the key information, as previews are truncated.

Category and Approval

Promotional RCS messages should only go to customers who have agreed to receive marketing messages, with an easy way to opt out, following the same consent principles as SMS.

Compliance Checklist

  • Images are clear, sized as the provider recommends, and do not hide important information that is missing from the text.
  • Promotional rich cards go only to customers who have agreed to receive them.
  • Your brand (name, logo and description) is verified with the RCS provider before launch.

Rules to keep in mind for E-commerce & D2C Brands

The Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 require clear seller details, prices, return and refund policies and grievance officer information. The CCPA's 2023 guidelines prohibit dark patterns such as false urgency and drip pricing, and marketing messages need opt-in.

General guidance, not legal advice. Rules change, so confirm current requirements before launch. See our RCS compliance guide for India.

Tips for Better Results

  • Send only to people who have opted in, and record when and where they did so.
  • Make the offer specific and honest, with a clear end date and any conditions stated.

Search and shopping ads capture intent; social ads and influencers create demand; WhatsApp recovers abandoned carts and handles support; SMS sends delivery updates and OTPs; email runs welcome, browse-abandonment and win-back flows.

Questions About This Template

When should a online store send the abandoned cart reminder message?

Send to opted-in shoppers a few hours after they leave items in the cart. Sending it at a consistent time builds trust and reduces follow-up calls.

What happens if the customer's phone does not support RCS?

The message falls back to SMS. In India the fallback must use a DLT-registered template, which is why this page includes the SMS version.

Do RCS messages need brand verification?

Yes. RCS business messages are sent from a verified brand profile with your name and logo, which needs to be approved before launch.

Can DND Teams set this up for my online store?

Yes. We adapt the template to your business, register or submit it, and connect it to your software or our panel. Share your use case on WhatsApp or through the form.
