How Much Does Social Media Management Cost in the USA?

US social media packages range from a few posts a month to full management with ads and community replies. This guide explains what you should get at each level, what changes the price, the FTC rules that apply and how to test an agency before you commit.

Posting on social media looks simple until you try to do it every week while running a business. Content has to be planned, designed, written, scheduled, answered and measured, and that is why many US small businesses hand it to a freelancer or an agency.

Quotes vary widely because "social media management" can mean anything from eight template posts a month to a full content, community and paid-social service. This guide explains what each level should include, what drives the price, the US rules you need to follow and how to judge results.

What social media management usually includes

  • Strategy: which platforms to use, who you are trying to reach and what a good result looks like (calls, bookings, store visits or online sales).
  • Content calendar: a monthly plan of posts tied to your offers, seasons and local events.
  • Design and copy: graphics, short videos or reels, captions and hashtags in your brand style.
  • Publishing: scheduling posts at the times your audience is active.
  • Community management: replying to comments and messages, and flagging complaints or sales enquiries to you quickly.
  • Reporting: a monthly summary of reach, engagement, clicks and, most importantly, enquiries.

Paid social (Meta, TikTok or LinkedIn ads) is a separate job. If it is included, the ad spend should still be paid by you directly to the platform.

What drives the price

  1. Number of platforms. Each platform needs its own formats and its own audience thinking.
  2. Posting volume and format. Short-form video costs more to produce than static graphics.
  3. Who creates the raw content. Using your own photos and clips is cheaper than shoots or custom animation.
  4. Community management hours. Busy restaurant or clinic pages need daily replies; a B2B LinkedIn page may not.
  5. Paid social. Campaign set-up, audiences, creative testing and reporting add to the fee.
  6. Approvals and industry rules. Healthcare, finance and legal brands need extra review time.

Typical price ranges

Package DND Teams (indicative) Typical inclusions
Starter typically US$300–US$600 per month 1 platform, 12 posts, captions and hashtags, monthly report
Growth typically US$600–US$1,000 per month 2 platforms, 20 posts plus 4 reels, community management
Premium typically US$1,000+ per month 3 or more platforms, video-led content, paid social management, review call

Prices are in US dollars and quoted on your requirements. Monthly plans have a 3-month minimum term, and ad spend is paid separately, directly to the platform. Our rates sit well below typical US agency retainers because our creative team works from India while we schedule, reply and report on US time. See how our pricing works for what affects your quote.

Choosing platforms for a US small business

  • Facebook and Instagram suit most local businesses: restaurants, salons, gyms, clinics, home services and retail.
  • Google Business Profile posts and photos are not "social media", but they often drive more local calls than any feed. Keep them updated too.
  • LinkedIn is the main channel for B2B services, recruiting and professional firms.
  • TikTok and Instagram Reels reach younger audiences and reward short, frequent video.
  • YouTube suits how-to content and longer product explainers.

Starting with one or two platforms done well beats five done badly.

US rules for social content

FTC endorsement and disclosure rules

The Federal Trade Commission's Endorsement Guides apply to influencer posts, brand ambassadors and employees who promote your business. If someone has a material connection to you (payment, free products, a discount or a family or business relationship), the connection must be disclosed clearly and close to the claim, for example "#ad" or "Paid partnership", not hidden among hashtags. The FTC publishes plain-English guidance in Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers.

Fake reviews and testimonials

The FTC's rule on consumer reviews and testimonials bans fake reviews, buying reviews and suppressing negative ones. Never ask your agency to post reviews for you, and ask for reviews from real customers without offering incentives tied to a positive rating.

Claims and industry rules

Advertising claims must be truthful and supported. Health, financial and legal businesses have extra rules, and healthcare providers must be careful with patient photos and stories. Our US clinic marketing guide covers the issues.

Follow-up by text

If social posts or ads collect phone numbers for text follow-up, the TCPA and carrier rules apply. See our TCPA-compliant SMS guide.

Measuring results

Followers and likes are easy to report and hard to bank. Ask for reports that connect social activity to business results:

  • Clicks to your website, calls and direction requests.
  • Messages and enquiries received from social.
  • Bookings or sales from tracked links, offer codes or form fields ("How did you hear about us?").
  • For paid social, cost per lead and cost per sale.

Questions to ask before hiring

  • Who writes and designs the content, and how many revisions are included?
  • How quickly are comments and messages answered, and during which US time zone?
  • Will I own the pages, ad accounts and all content created?
  • What does the monthly report show, and is there a review call?
  • What is the minimum term and the notice period?

Red flags

  • Promises of a set number of followers, or growth that comes from bought or fake accounts.
  • The agency asks to own your page or ad account.
  • Generic stock content that could belong to any business.
  • Reports that never mention enquiries or sales.

Start small with a one-month test

If you have never outsourced social media, a short trial shows you the agency's content quality, response time and reporting before you sign a retainer.
