Most UK small business owners know they should be active on social media, but few have the time to plan, create, publish and respond consistently. That is why many outsource to a freelancer or agency. Prices range widely, and packages that look similar can include very different amounts of work.
This guide explains what social media management typically includes, what drives cost, indicative USD price ranges, the UK advertising rules that apply and how to judge results.
What is included
- Strategy: audience, goals, platforms, content pillars
- Content calendar: monthly plan aligned with your offers and seasons
- Content creation: graphics, carousels, short videos, captions and hashtags
- Publishing: scheduling at the right times
- Community management: replying to comments and messages
- Reporting: reach, engagement, clicks, enquiries and next steps
Often separate:
- Paid social advertising management, with ad spend paid to the platforms
- Photography and video shoots
- Influencer and creator campaigns
- Crisis or reputation management
Choosing platforms in the UK
- Facebook: broad adult audience, local community groups, events and ads
- Instagram: hospitality, retail, beauty, fitness, interiors and lifestyle
- TikTok: younger audiences and entertaining short video; increasingly used for product discovery
- LinkedIn: B2B, professional services, recruitment and corporate
- YouTube: tutorials, reviews and long-form content
- Pinterest: home, weddings, food and fashion inspiration
- Nextdoor: neighbourhood-focused, useful for some local services
Two platforms done well beats five done badly.
What drives the price?
- Number of platforms and posts per month
- Video content, which takes longer than static posts
- Original photography versus your own photos
- Community management hours
- Paid ads management
- Approval rounds and revisions
- Regulated sectors such as finance, health and alcohol, which need more care

UK rules for social content
ASA and the CAP Code
Social media posts, ads and influencer content that promote a business are marketing communications under the CAP Code, enforced by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). Claims must be truthful and substantiated, prices clear and ads obviously identifiable as ads.
Influencer disclosure
The ASA and the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) expect paid, gifted or incentivised posts to be clearly labelled, typically with "#ad" or "Ad" at the start. Brands share responsibility for disclosure.
Consumer protection
The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 strengthened consumer protection enforcement, including on fake reviews and hidden fees. Never post or commission fake reviews or testimonials.
Sector rules
Financial promotions are regulated by the FCA; gambling, alcohol, healthcare, cosmetics and e-cigarettes have specific advertising rules.
Data protection
Lead forms and direct messages that collect personal data must follow UK GDPR, and marketing messages sent by email or text must follow PECR.

Measuring results
- Enquiries: messages, calls, bookings and forms from social
- Website traffic and sales, tracked with UTM parameters and pixels
- Engagement quality: saves, shares and comments
- Reach in your target area
- Cost per lead or sale from paid campaigns
Follower numbers are a secondary measure at best.
Agency, freelancer or in-house?
- In-house: close to the business and great at capturing everyday moments, but one person rarely covers strategy, design, video, copy and ads equally well.
- Freelancer: cost-effective for one skill, such as design or video editing.
- Agency: a team with continuity and wider skills, at the cost of less day-to-day presence.
Many small businesses combine an in-house content capturer with an agency for planning, editing, publishing and ads.
Questions to ask before hiring
- Who will create the content, and will it be original to my business?
- How many posts, on which platforms, in what formats?
- Who replies to comments and messages, and how quickly?
- Is ad spend separate?
- Will I own my accounts, content and ad account?
- How will you report results?
- What is the minimum contract?
Red flags
- Promises of follower numbers
- Template content reused across clients
- Agencies owning your page or ad account
- No mention of ASA rules or disclosure
- Reports with no link to enquiries or sales
Getting more from a small budget
- Repurpose one good video into several formats
- Use real photos of your team and work, with permission
- Answer common customer questions in posts
- Boost your best organic posts rather than creating separate ads
- Link social to your booking page or WhatsApp so interest becomes enquiries
A sample month for a UK beauty salon
On the Growth package, a salon might publish four short videos (a signature treatment, a stylist introduction, a quick aftercare tip and a salon tour), four carousels (price list highlights, seasonal offer, product recommendations and a "meet the team" post) and four single posts (bank holiday hours, a client favourite shared with permission, a booking reminder and a local partnership). Stories cover daily availability, messages are answered on weekdays and bookings from social are tracked through a booking link with UTM parameters. The monthly report shows which content drove profile visits, booking clicks and new clients.
Paid social basics
Organic reach is limited, so a modest ad budget often multiplies results. Boost posts that already perform well, use lead or booking objectives rather than likes, target by location and interest, refresh creative regularly and judge campaigns by cost per enquiry or sale.
Contracts and onboarding
A good onboarding process makes the first month productive. Expect your agency to ask for brand guidelines, logos, fonts, access to your pages through Meta Business Suite or the platform's own partner tools, examples of content you like, your key offers and seasonal dates, and the questions customers ask most often. Agree a monthly approval workflow, such as a content calendar shared a week ahead, so you can check accuracy before anything is published. Read the contract for the notice period, who owns the content created, what happens to your accounts and files if you leave and whether ad spend is billed by the agency or charged directly to your own card. Monthly rolling contracts after an initial period give you flexibility; long lock-ins without performance reviews should be questioned.
Responding to comments and complaints
Community management is often the most underrated part of the service. Customers increasingly ask questions and raise complaints in comments and direct messages, and they expect fast replies. Agree a response policy: which questions the agency can answer directly, which need your input, and how complaints are escalated. Reply publicly with empathy, move personal details to a private channel and never delete legitimate criticism simply because it is uncomfortable. Hide or report spam and abusive comments in line with the platform's rules.
