Google Business Profile Optimisation for UAE Businesses

For clinics, restaurants, salons, garages, contractors and shops in the UAE, the Google Maps listing is often the most valuable marketing asset. Here is how to get it right.

By the DND Teams editorial team · Updated

When someone in the UAE searches "car service near me", "pharmacy open now", "salon in Al Barsha" or "shawarma JLT", Google usually shows a map with three businesses above the regular results. Those three listings receive a large share of calls, direction requests and website visits. For local businesses, appearing there consistently can be worth more than any other marketing activity.

The listing is powered by your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business). It is free, but optimising it properly takes care, especially in the UAE, where virtual offices, shared buildings, frequent relocations and bilingual audiences create specific challenges. This guide walks through the process step by step.

How Google ranks local results

Google describes three main factors for local ranking:

  • Relevance: how well your profile matches the search
  • Distance: how far your location is from the searcher or the area in the query
  • Prominence: how well known and trusted your business is, based on reviews, links, mentions and overall web presence

You cannot change distance, but you can strongly influence relevance and prominence.

Step 1: Claim and verify

  • Search for your business on Google Maps. If a listing exists, claim it; if not, create one.
  • Verification methods vary and may include video verification, phone, email or postcard. Google decides which options are offered.
  • If a former employee or agency controls your listing, request ownership through Google's process. Always keep ownership in the company's name, and give agencies manager access rather than ownership.

Step 2: Get the basics exactly right

Business name

Use your real business name as shown on your trade licence, signage and website. Adding keywords or locations that are not part of your name ("Best Dental Clinic Dubai Marina Cheap Implants") breaks Google's guidelines and risks suspension.

Address or service area

  • Storefront businesses (clinics, restaurants, shops, salons) should show their real address with an accurate map pin. Include building name, floor or unit where helpful, because many UAE addresses are building-based.
  • Service-area businesses (cleaners, AC repair, movers, mobile car wash) should hide their address and set service areas instead.
  • Virtual offices and shared desks that are not staffed during business hours generally do not meet Google's guidelines and often lead to verification problems or suspensions.

Categories

Your primary category has a strong influence on which searches you appear for. Choose the most specific accurate option, such as "Pediatric dentist" rather than "Dentist" if that is your main service. Add relevant secondary categories, but do not add categories for services you do not provide.

Hours

Keep regular hours accurate, and add special hours for Ramadan, Eid, National Day and other holidays. Inaccurate hours generate bad reviews quickly.

Phone, website and booking links

Use a local number that is answered. Link to the most relevant page, typically your homepage or location page, and add booking or ordering links if available. Many UAE businesses also add a WhatsApp link through the website or chat features available in their region.

Step 3: Complete every relevant section

  • Services or menu, with short descriptions and prices where appropriate
  • Products, for retailers
  • Attributes such as wheelchair accessibility, parking, women-led, outdoor seating or online appointments
  • Business description of up to 750 characters, explaining what you do and for whom, without keyword stuffing
  • Opening date for new businesses

Write in the language most of your customers use. Arabic and English audiences both matter in the UAE, and Google may show content in the user's language where available.

Step 4: Photos and video

Profiles with good photos tend to attract more engagement. Upload:

  • Exterior photos from the street or parking, so customers can find you in a busy building or mall
  • Interior photos showing the space
  • Team photos
  • Products, dishes or work examples
  • Short videos where useful

Use real, recent images, not stock photos. Add new photos regularly.

Step 5: Reviews

Reviews influence both ranking and choice.

  • Ask every genuine customer for a review with a direct link, by WhatsApp, SMS or a QR code at the counter.
  • Reply to every review politely and promptly, in the reviewer's language where possible.
  • Handle negative reviews calmly: acknowledge, explain what you are doing and invite them to contact you directly.
  • Never buy reviews, write your own, review competitors or offer rewards for positive reviews. Google removes fake reviews and can restrict profiles that use them.
  • For clinics, never confirm in a reply that someone is a patient or mention treatment details.

Step 6: Posts and Q&A

Use posts to share offers, events, new products and updates. Keep them short with a clear call to action. Monitor questions asked on your profile and answer them; add common questions to your website FAQ too.

Step 7: Support the profile with your website

  • Show the same name, address and phone number (NAP) on your website as on the profile
  • Create a strong page for each main service, and a location page for each branch
  • Add LocalBusiness structured data to your site
  • Embed a map on your contact page
  • Make sure the site is fast on mobile

Step 8: Citations and local mentions

Consistent listings on other reputable platforms reinforce your details: Apple Maps (through Apple Business Connect), Bing Places, relevant UAE directories, industry associations, chambers of commerce and mall or community directories. Fix old listings with outdated phone numbers or addresses, particularly after a move.

Multi-branch businesses

Create one profile per genuine, staffed location. Each needs its own accurate address, phone number (ideally), hours and photos, and a matching location page on your website. Avoid creating profiles for locations that are not real branches.

Common UAE pitfalls

  • Wrong map pin in large buildings, malls or free zones
  • Duplicate listings created by staff or previous agencies
  • Keyword-stuffed names leading to suspension
  • Virtual office addresses that fail verification
  • Outdated hours during Ramadan
  • Unanswered reviews, especially negative ones
  • Ownership held by an ex-employee or agency

Measuring results

Google Business Profile performance reports show searches, views, calls, direction requests, website clicks and bookings. Add UTM parameters to your website link so you can see profile traffic separately in Google Analytics. Track calls and WhatsApp enquiries that come from the profile, and review monthly.

A monthly maintenance routine

  1. Add five to ten new photos
  2. Publish two to four posts
  3. Reply to all new reviews and questions
  4. Check hours, especially before holidays
  5. Review performance and compare with the previous month
  6. Check for duplicate or edited information suggested by users

When a profile gets suspended

Suspensions usually follow a guideline issue: a keyword-stuffed name, an address that does not meet the rules, duplicate listings or suspicious edits. If it happens, do not create a new profile. Fix the cause first, gather evidence such as your trade licence, signage photos and utility bills, and submit a reinstatement request through Google's official process.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I rank higher on Google Maps in Dubai?

Use your real business name, choose the most accurate primary category, keep your address or service area correct, complete every section, add real photos, collect genuine reviews and support the profile with a strong website.

Can I use a virtual office address for my Google Business Profile in the UAE?

Generally not. Google's guidelines require a real location staffed during business hours, or a service area for businesses that visit customers. Virtual offices often fail verification or lead to suspension.

Should I add keywords to my business name on Google?

No. Use your real business name. Adding keywords breaks Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended.

How do I get more Google reviews?

Ask every genuine customer with a direct review link by WhatsApp, SMS or QR code, and reply to all reviews. Never buy reviews or offer rewards for positive ones.
