Professional Fee Invoice SMS Template for Law Firms & Advocates

A ready-to-adapt SMS message for law firms and advocates, with placeholders, sample values and compliance notes.

When to Send This Message

Send when an invoice is issued. For law firms and advocates, this is one of the everyday messages that keeps clients informed without a phone call. Most businesses send it automatically from their software, so the timing is consistent.

People look for lawyers when they face a specific problem, and they want clear information and a prompt, discreet response.

The SMS Template

India (DLT format)

Header: [6-character header]-S · Category: Service Implicit

Dear {#var#}, invoice {#var#} for professional fees in matter {#var#} has been emailed to you. Amount Rs. {#var#}. - [Business Name]

International (plain text)

Dear {client}, invoice {invoice} for professional fees in matter {case_ref} has been emailed to you. Amount Rs. {amount}. - [Business Name]

Example with sample values

Dear Mr. Saxena, invoice LF-2231 for professional fees in matter CS 112/2026 has been emailed to you. Amount Rs. 25,000. - [Business Name]

With these sample values the message is 140 characters in the standard GSM-7 character set, which is 1 SMS part (square brackets count as two characters each). Long links or local-language (Unicode) text increase the count, as Unicode SMS allow 70 characters per single part.

Replace [Business Name] with your registered brand name. Links shown use example.com as a placeholder; use your own domain.

Placeholders and Sample Values

PlaceholderMeaningSample value
{#var#}ClientMr. Saxena
{#var#}InvoiceLF-2231
{#var#}Case refCS 112/2026
{#var#}Amount25,000

Filling in each placeholder

  • Client (sample: Mr. Saxena): Use the first name or the salutation the customer gave you; fall back to a neutral greeting if the field is empty.
  • Invoice (sample: LF-2231): Use the same reference format that appears on your invoices, receipts or software, so customers and staff can match it quickly.
  • Case ref (sample: CS 112/2026): Use the same reference format that appears on your invoices, receipts or software, so customers and staff can match it quickly.
  • Amount (sample: 25,000): Write amounts as Rs. 1,499 rather than with the rupee symbol, which forces Unicode encoding in SMS and shortens each part to 70 characters.

This template has 4 placeholders and a body of 139 characters before values are filled in. Shorter messages cost less and are more likely to be read in full; aim to keep the filled-in message within one or two SMS parts.

Category and Approval

In India this type of message is usually registered as Service Implicit: it relates to an existing transaction or relationship and can be delivered to numbers on the DND registry. It must not contain promotional content.

Compliance Checklist

  • Promotional versions are sent only within the permitted hours and only to recipients who have not opted out.
  • The header (sender ID) and the template are registered on a DLT platform, and the template text matches exactly, apart from the variables.
  • Each {#var#} holds only the kind of value it was registered for; most platforms limit each variable to 30 characters.

Rules to keep in mind for Law Firms & Advocates

Bar Council of India Rule 36 prohibits advocates from soliciting work or advertising, although websites with factual information (name, contact, enrolment, areas of practice) are permitted. We therefore focus on informational websites and client-service messages, not promotional campaigns.

General guidance, not legal advice. Rules change, so confirm current requirements before launch. See our SMS compliance guide for India.

Tips for Better Results

  • Keep one purpose per message; if you need to send a reminder and a document, the reminder should still make sense on its own.
  • Use the customer's name and a reference number so the message is easy to trust and to search for later.
