Car buyers today compare inventory, prices, reviews and financing options across several dealer websites, marketplaces and social platforms before they ever step onto a lot. By the time they contact a dealership, many have narrowed their choice to a few vehicles. The dealers who win are the ones that show up during research, present inventory clearly and follow up fast.
This guide covers the digital marketing system that works for US independent and franchise dealerships, from search and inventory listings to video, social, reputation and compliant follow-up.
This article is general information, not legal advice. Dealers should work with counsel on advertising and consumer protection compliance.
1. Your website is your digital showroom
Your website should make it effortless to find, evaluate and enquire about a vehicle:
- Fast inventory search with filters for make, model, year, price, mileage and body style
- High-quality photos of every vehicle, ideally 20 or more, plus walk-around video
- Clear vehicle details: VIN, trim, features, history report links and condition notes
- Transparent pricing with clear disclosures of fees and conditions
- Easy calls to action: check availability, book a test drive, value your trade, get pre-qualified
- Mobile performance: most shoppers browse on phones
2. Inventory SEO
Each vehicle detail page can rank for specific searches such as "used 2022 Toyota RAV4 Houston". Improve inventory SEO by:
- Unique, descriptive title tags with year, make, model, trim and city
- Vehicle structured data where your platform supports it
- Sold vehicle handling: keep pages briefly with similar alternatives rather than producing errors
- Model research pages for the brands and models you sell most
- Location pages for the areas you genuinely serve
3. Google Business Profile
- Separate profiles for sales, service and parts where Google's guidelines allow
- Accurate hours for each department
- Fresh photos of the showroom, lot, service bays and team
- Regular posts for new arrivals, service specials and events
- Prompt, professional replies to every review
4. Vehicle listing ads and paid search
Google offers vehicle ads that show cars from your inventory feed with an image, price and location, and Meta offers automotive inventory ads. Combine them with search campaigns for model, brand and "near me" searches, plus conquest campaigns on competitor models where appropriate. Track leads and sales, not just clicks.
5. Social media and video
- Walk-around videos of new arrivals
- Short clips on features, safety tech and EV charging
- Team introductions and customer delivery moments, with permission
- Service tips and maintenance reminders
- Live streams for events and launches
Facebook Marketplace and Instagram can drive local shoppers, while YouTube is a major research platform for car buyers.
6. Reputation and reviews
Buyers read reviews of dealerships closely. Ask every buyer and service customer for honest feedback, reply to every review and resolve issues offline. Never post fake reviews or offer incentives for positive ones; the FTC's rule on fake reviews and testimonials, in effect since 2024, allows civil penalties.
7. Advertising honestly
Federal and state laws prohibit deceptive advertising. In general:
- Advertised prices should be available to ordinary buyers, not only those who qualify for every rebate
- Mandatory fees should be disclosed clearly
- Financing and lease ads must follow Truth in Lending and Consumer Leasing Act disclosure requirements
- "Bait" vehicles that are unavailable should not be advertised
- Add-on products should be optional and clearly explained
State attorneys general and the FTC have taken action against dealers over misleading pricing and add-ons. Have your ad templates reviewed by counsel.
8. Speed to lead
When a shopper submits a form, calls or messages, a fast, helpful response makes a big difference. Set up:
- Instant acknowledgement by email or text, with consent
- Routing to the available salesperson
- A personal reply within minutes during business hours
- Follow-up sequences that stop when the customer replies or opts out
9. Compliant texting
Texting is ideal for availability updates, appointment reminders and service notifications. Under the TCPA, marketing texts sent through automated platforms should have prior express written consent, and every text should include opt-out instructions. Register your brand and campaigns for 10DLC. See our TCPA-compliant SMS guide.
10. Service department marketing
Service brings recurring revenue and future sales. Use reminders for oil changes, tire rotations and recalls, online service booking, and email or text offers for opted-in customers. A happy service customer is a strong prospect for the next vehicle.
11. Measure what matters
- Leads by source: website, listing ads, marketplaces, social, phone
- Appointment set and show rates
- Cost per sale by channel
- Response time to leads
- Review rating and volume
- Service bookings online

Common mistakes
- Poor photos or stock images on vehicle pages
- Prices that do not match what buyers are quoted
- Slow lead response
- Ignoring service department marketing
- Measuring clicks instead of appointments and sales
Marketplaces and third-party listing sites
Large automotive marketplaces bring significant traffic, but leads are shared with competitors and costs add up. Treat marketplaces as one channel among several: keep inventory data accurate across every listing, respond quickly to marketplace leads and track cost per sale for each source. At the same time, invest in your own website, SEO and customer list so that more buyers come to you directly over time.
Electric vehicles and new technology
Many shoppers have questions about EV range, charging at home, public charging networks, battery warranties and federal or state incentives. Content that answers these questions clearly, reviewed for accuracy because incentive rules change, can attract early-stage shoppers and position your dealership as a trusted guide.
Trade-in and finance pages
Two of the most valuable pages on a dealer website are the trade-in valuation page and the finance application page, because shoppers who use them are close to buying. Make the trade-in form short, explain how the valuation works and what happens next, and follow up quickly with a real person. On finance pages, explain the process in plain language, state that approval depends on credit and lender criteria, and use a secure application form. Avoid "guaranteed approval" claims. Link both pages from every vehicle detail page so shoppers can take the next step without searching.
Email marketing for past buyers
Past buyers and service customers are a dealership's most valuable audience. With an opt-in list, send useful emails: service reminders, recall notices, seasonal maintenance tips, trade-in value updates and invitations to events. Follow the CAN-SPAM Act by including a clear sender, an accurate subject line, your postal address and an easy unsubscribe link that is honoured promptly.
A 90-day plan
- Month 1: Fix vehicle pages, photos and Google profiles; set up lead routing.
- Month 2: Launch vehicle ads and model search campaigns; start walk-around video.
- Month 3: Add review requests, service reminders and monthly reporting by cost per sale.
