Post-Treatment Care Instructions SMS Template for Dental Clinics

A ready-to-adapt SMS message for dental clinics, with placeholders, sample values and compliance notes.

When to Send This Message

Send right after a procedure so the patient has care instructions in writing. For dental clinics, this is one of the everyday messages that keeps patients informed without a phone call. It works best when it is triggered automatically from your booking, billing or CRM software.

Treatment often runs over several sittings, so reminders and recall messages matter as much as new enquiries.

The SMS Template

India (DLT format)

Header: [6-character header]-S · Category: Service Implicit

Dear {#var#}, thank you for visiting [Business Name] today. After your {#var#}, please follow the care instructions shared by the doctor: {#var#}. Call {#var#} if you have severe pain or swelling.

International (plain text)

Dear {patient}, thank you for visiting [Business Name] today. After your {treatment}, please follow the care instructions shared by the doctor: {link}. Call {phone} if you have severe pain or swelling.

Example with sample values

Dear Anita, thank you for visiting [Business Name] today. After your tooth extraction, please follow the care instructions shared by the doctor: https://example.com/c/DC2. Call 0755-XXXXXXX if you have severe pain or swelling.

With these sample values the message is 228 characters in the standard GSM-7 character set, which is 2 SMS parts (square brackets count as two characters each). Long links or local-language (Unicode) text increase the count, as Unicode SMS allow 70 characters per single part.

Replace [Business Name] with your registered brand name. Links shown use example.com as a placeholder; use your own domain.

Placeholders and Sample Values

Filling in each placeholder

  • Patient (sample: Anita): Use the first name or the salutation the customer gave you; fall back to a neutral greeting if the field is empty.
  • Treatment (sample: tooth extraction): Keep the value short and specific; test the longest realistic value to check the message still reads well.
  • Link (sample: https://example.com/c/DC2): Use your own short, recognisable domain; for SMS in India the domain must be whitelisted on DLT, and each variable is usually limited to 30 characters.
  • Phone (sample: 0755-XXXXXXX): Use a number the customer can actually reach during business hours, ideally one already shown on your website.

This template has 4 placeholders and a body of 201 characters before values are filled in. Shorter messages cost less and are more likely to be read in full; aim to keep the filled-in message within one or two SMS parts.

Category and Approval

In India this type of message is usually registered as Service Implicit: it relates to an existing transaction or relationship and can be delivered to numbers on the DND registry. It must not contain promotional content.

Compliance Checklist

  • The brand name in the message matches your registered business or header.
  • Promotional versions are sent only within the permitted hours and only to recipients who have not opted out.
  • The header (sender ID) and the template are registered on a DLT platform, and the template text matches exactly, apart from the variables.

Rules to keep in mind for Dental Clinics

Dentists in India are bound by the Dental Council of India's ethics regulations, which restrict self-promotional claims, and by ASCI rules on health advertising. We keep content educational, avoid guaranteed results, and use before/after images only with written patient consent.

General guidance, not legal advice. Rules change, so confirm current requirements before launch. See our SMS compliance guide for India.

Tips for Better Results

  • Send it as close as possible to the event it relates to, such as right after booking or the day before an appointment.
  • Keep one purpose per message; if you need to send a reminder and a document, the reminder should still make sense on its own.

Where this message fits for Dental Clinics

Dental patients usually search when they have pain or need a check-up, so 'emergency dentist near me' and 'teeth whitening price' are typical searches. They compare reviews, location, opening hours and whether the clinic takes their insurance plan, and often ask about prices on WhatsApp before booking. Cosmetic treatments such as aligners and implants have longer decision cycles, with several consultations and finance questions.

Local search and maps listings drive most new patients; Instagram before-and-after posts (where allowed) support cosmetic treatments; SMS and WhatsApp handle six-month recall reminders; voice calls are used for treatment plan follow-ups; email nurtures leads for implants and aligners.

Campaign ideas that pair with this template

  • Six-month recall reminders with an online booking link
  • Back-to-school check-up offers for children in August
  • Aligner consultation nurture sequence with FAQ videos and payment plan explanations

Questions About This Template

When should a dental clinic send the post-treatment care instructions message?

Send right after a procedure so the patient has care instructions in writing. Automate it from your software where possible so it is never forgotten.

Can I send this SMS in India without DLT registration?

No. Commercial SMS in India must use a header and a content template registered on a DLT platform. Messages that do not match a registered template are blocked by the operator.

What does {#var#} mean?

It marks the variable part of a DLT template, such as a name, date or amount. Everything outside the variables must be sent exactly as registered.

Can DND Teams set this up for my dental clinic?

Yes. We adapt the template to your business, register or submit it, and connect it to your software or our panel. Share your use case on WhatsApp or through the form.
